ABOUT US

The café where literature lives

A cultural programme paying tribute to the life’s work of Imre Kertész and László Krasznahorkai.

Within the historic walls of Centrál Grand Café, literature does not live on the pages of textbooks, it lives in the air. Two Nobel Prize-winning bodies of work, one extraordinary space, and an experience students will never forget.

Where thoughts find a home

Centrál Grand Café’s new cultural initiative pays tribute to two outstanding Nobel Prize-winning figures of Hungarian literature: Imre Kertész and László Krasznahorkai. The project aims to make visible once again the intellectual environment in which Hungarian literature has always been born, the communal space of conversations, ideas and inspiration, by transforming the historic coffeehouse tradition into a contemporary experience.

For Centrál, culture is not merely a tribute to the past, but a living value that carries with it a responsibility to be passed on to the next generation.

Literature as they've never experienced it

As part of the initiative, the café introduces secondary school students to internationally significant figures of Hungarian literature through interactive literature classes, held in an experiential format within the historic space itself. The programme aims to make literature a personal and inspiring experience once again, and to foster a natural connection between young people and the culture of reading, writing and thinking.

With this initiative, Centrál does not seek to serve as an alternative to education, but rather to reinforce its values within a uniquely immersive setting.

Even flavours remember

The gastronomic dimension of the programme evokes the natural meeting point of culture and the coffeehouse experience: guests encounter the literary heritage in culinary form through desserts inspired by the Nobel Prize award banquets.

Through this initiative, Centrál embodies the conviction that a café can be more than a place of hospitality — it can be a home for our shared intellectual values. Reading, writing and thinking remain our common cultural treasures, worthy of rediscovery and of being passed on.
